Have a '69, 427 coupe, NO A/C. Anti-freeze leaking a bit through the heater inside right, not much, but a lot under the right side outside, soaked up the heat shield material. Heater hoses on firewall not leaking outside. Anyway, to get to the inside heater core, I have to remove the right dashboard panel and the center console panel. I've removed all the screws and the vent handle but the rside panel won't come off. Anybody know if there is something behind the panel that must be removed? Any other advice on the leak problem is appreciated!
:iagree: took mine through the firewall, just make sure you take it with you to make sure you get the right replacement, first one i got from the corner parts store was wrong.
'69 stick with tour plan. The core isn't that bad to get out. The rt panel's Astro vent might be holding you up. There's a wing nut that holds the tube in. It's at the 12 o'clock position on the tube towards the kick plate POA but doable. Also behind the kickplate is a bolt holding the birdcage rod. THE ROD MUST BE REMOVED. Other bolt behind Inst cluster. 4 nuts on the firewall hold the heaterbox in.
hey guyz; I'm doing the same with the wifes 1973 (350 w/AC). From the pics... it looks like you took it out from the engine bay side. Am I seeing this correctly???
Did anything need be removed from inside the cockpit?
Mike--I believe that with A/C, you must go through the inside--a PITA--akin to giving yourself a root canal-- I found it easier to remove the passenger seat as it gave me much more room--a good idea to have new replacement core pressure tested before installation.

What forces an A/C heater core to go through the inside?
I need to replace my heater core (1977) and the car was originally equipped with A/C. When I installed the 383 engine, I took out the A/C compressor, compressor bracket, various A/C lines and the condenser. Do you think there's still something attached to my heater core that will require going through the inside? I did not remove the VIR, which is close to the heater core compartment.
It's the presence of the A/C stuff that forces inside removal, so you should be fine. I, on the other hand, get to go at it from the inside this weekend. :smash:
JEEZZZ . C section? Cuttin thru the fire wall is an aborti_n. How do you repair the damage? The g-d dam-ed core removal IS NO BIG DEAL. A PITA but very doable. Don't butcher the fire wall over this. Jumper out the heater. If you want to know how to R&R the core email me. I've done it. Heater now works well. Firewall still in 1 pce. Gotta go now, the ether, the ether......
I just removed my core in a non air car from the firewall side. It was a piece of cake. It will take about 10 times longer to clean up the sealer from around the box that it took to take the core out.....
