Default Hood Insulation

The insulation on my hood in the '76 is intact but dirty, greasy and ugly. FUUUUGLY!!

Has anyone ever just painted this stuff? FLat black or what?? Where can I get a good quality replacement that will just replace the one that is there with no mods? It is 1/2" thick fiberglass, and at one time was yellow. Now it is just dirty and ugly. Looks like it comes off easy enough - the clips are all intact too, and come down with just a pliers-pinch.

Advise on refinishing it or replacing it? :nopity The engine and all looks so nice under the hood, but when I look at what's underneath the hood itself, it is sooooo bad. :nonod:

The replacements that GM, Ecklers, C.C, etc. sale are no where near the cut of the original. It's about 2/3's the size and takes two to cover like the original, plus you have to do the trimming. They're not form molded so you won't get the clean edges. Keep the original as long as you can stand it. If you have better luck than I've have finding NOS, please let me know. :nonod:

OK well it looks like I'll just paint the old stuff. Thansk guys for the replies! At least the OEM one fits, is intact, and original.

I just painted mine with Vinyl and fabric paint from Dupli-Color # VS1 Black Vinyl. I think it came out pretty good. If you want a picture send me your email and I'll be happy to send you one.
I heard of people buying new ones that didn't look any better than the old one.

Saw this on Vettedan's car in the for sale section, was wondering how that stuff holds up under the hood. Pretty sure that is the same stuff I used on my floorboards, under the carpet.

Interesting, the one I bought from GM Parts Direct was molded and contoured and fit exactly as the original. I did buy that about a year ago, maybe they have changed them since?

Paul, here is the part number: 472800

Here is a link to the web site: http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/

I would maybe call them on this one first to make sure it's molded and contoured like the original. Cost is listed at about 63 bucks, but I remember getting dinged pretty hard on shipping as it ships oversize. Hope this helps?

seems to me that there was a number of folks on this forum that took out the insulation and run without it. No problem with heat, etc.
Any comments from those folks?

I'm in the same boat - old one is ugly/torn, wondering if replace or remove?

Paul, I would contact customer service on that one, seems odd they would list it and then say no? I know it will ship oversize (the box was nearly as big as the hood, but flat). If you find hood insulators elsewhere that do not ship oversize they are probably not molded and contoured as they can not be folded or rolled up to a small shipping size. I have seen some that are not molded and while functional, they do not look good at all. I would probably take my chances and not have an insulator at all before I would buy one that is not "correct"

Yea it would not look good. Although look at the pic above from the guy who has the same shiny stuff we use under carpet! It looks good.
I do prefer direct replacement though.... no question.

I took mine off because it was falling apart. As far as heat goes, with a 160 thermostat & my present mods, it bearly hits 190 engine temp. The heat coming thru the vents is a different problem.

I would keep the insulation, that heat is not good for the hood paint, in fact when ever possible (when returning home, etc.) I'll pop the hood and let the heat out quick. Mine is a 454 and the heat is just incredible, I could heat the house with it! :mad
