Default Door alignment problem

Hello all,
I put the passenger side door on the project '69 this weekend. I first bolted up the hinges, and did not have the latch in the door yet. I leftt all the bolts just a little bit loose, and closed the door in position, so i could adjust it as needed.

The biggest problem is the door will not close all the way. It sticks out about 1/2 from the rear quarter panel. I have a pic if anybody want to see it. The door feels like it is binding, and will not close all the way, even with no latch in the door, or the pillar lock bolt.

any ideas?

Oh, these are not the original doors, it came with no doors.

Thanks,
Matt

are you absolutly sure that you have the correct doors? (Although it shouldn't make too much of a difference) How about the hinges? Are they brand new, original or used?, did you use any shims? Need a few more details and pics would be very helpful if you have them.

... could need some shims between the pillar and hinge to bring it out from the openning.
... coupe doors ?
... new weatherstripping ? is full and firm ?

definitely pics would help. :seeya

Thanks,
I am using the stock '69 hinges, and i think there are 3 or 4 shimms on them already. The doors have the crash impack beam in them, so i am not sure what year they are. I am still working on posting the pix

There are shims in place from the old doors, looks like about 3 shimms. How many have you all had to use to bring them out before? How many shimms is too much?

Thanks,

Matt

Don't want to change the subject but, by putting new weather strip,
this could give you door problems??. I planned on painting my car with the doors off and no weather strip till after the paint. :D

Door's with the metal crash bar for side impact were first used in 74 or 75 I think. You will need to play with all the door adjustments to get it to fit right. You need will need access to all the hinge bolts. (8 on the door & 8 on the birdcage).
When I did my doors I used some shims under the door to hold it at the correct height. Then I had to play with all the bolts and door shims until I had the fit I was looking for.

It looks like there are 4 shims on the hinges now, between the hinge and the body pillar. Could the problem be too many shimms? I am going to remove 2 of them tonight, and see what happens.

Thanks,

Matt

definitly sounds like you may have a couple too many shims on the door. Also check your new weatherstrip, as mentioned above sometimes the new strips cause the doors to not sit right until they have been properly beaten into submission by the doors being closed, especially the inner rubber next to the fender/birdcage. That pic seems to be a little extreme for it to just be the new rubbers though.

Keep us posted!

Default Fixed!

I have it now..finally aligned, well pretty close. I took the striker out last night, and tried to feel where it was binding. Turns out the doors have been sitting around a long time, and the weather stripping was completely dry rotted, and stiff. It had almost no compression to it.

I removed all the old weather stripping, and installed the striker, and the lined right up! The gap is a little tighter at the bottom of the door then at the top on the rear quarter panel side. Other than that, it looks pretty good!

Somebody here mentioned the weather stripping, so thats why i checked it , Thanks for the tips!
