@#%*!!!
I dry fitted my steering box today after cleaning, and it doesn't look good. I can't get it to lock up when centered even with the pitman shaft lash adjuster screw all the way down, and a closer look now that things are clean shows that the teeth on the sector gear and pitman gear are worn more than I thought.
The bushings are REALLY worn (i'd guess .010 of play between bearings and shaft), and I haven't taken the new blanks to the machine shop yet for reaming and honing, because I don't think this shaft will be salvagable! I could:
1. take a chance and see how much difference new bushings would make,
2. buy a new box, or
3. find a rebuildable core and salvage the sector gear and pitman shaft for the rebuild I had in mind in the first place. I already have the rebuild kit from Zip, and would prefer to use my seemingly fine case and worm gear if I can.
Does anyone have an old (but not trashed!) steering box laying around that they would be willing to sell the sector gear and pitman arm from? I'll cross post this in "Parts wanted".

I had Bair's rebuild mine and for $150 it's just like a new one. I didn't want the hassle of rebuilding mine myself. Too many other stuff to do on my car to bother with the extra hassle. Just bolted it on and hooked it up! :D
