I reinstalled the TH400 transmission in my 73 which I am doing a frame off restoration on. I screwed up and didn't have the torque converter seated properly when I torqued the bellhousing bolts up. Once I discovered my mistake I corrected the problem and reinstalled the transmission. Now I hear a clicking sound from the transmission when in neutral, drive or reverse when I spin the tail shaft. Thoughts please. :banghead:
Nothing you can do with the tailshaft will spin the converter unless you have fluid pressure. I'd still pull the transmission back out and check the converter engagement cogs though. Otherwise, I'd start it & run it.
Worst case scenario would be that you would have cracked the main housing or the cog that engages the converter at the input. But either should have been obvious.
Thanks for the info. tpiini Iwill pull the transmission this weekend is there anything else I should check. The clicking sound has me befuddled but I don't know sqaut about automatic transmissions. I've been out of the country for past several weeks but returning this weekend and need to get started back on the project. :steering:
I have a TH400 out of my72 on the bench now. I haven't had time to put it together yet so if you need a picture of the pump gears where the convertor tangs are let me know.
Gary
Thanks gtr1999 This would be helpful as I am not sure what I should be looking for other than broken pieces. Any thoughts on the clicking sound, is this normal. :banghead:
Gary I received the photos and appreciate it very much at least I now know what it should look like. Any thoughts on the clicking sound? As best I can tell it sounds as though it is coming from inside the casing and not the front of the transmission but not for sure. Thanks again for the photos.
:) :steering:
Glad you got the pictures, if you need more I have the whole thing on a bench, cleaned up. Was it rebuilt or did you just repalce the converter? I assume that you haven't put power to it yet. There is a spring loaded pawl for the parking dog. You would have to drop the pan to see if that might be disconnected and the pawl hanging down? Maybe had nothing to do with the converter in the first place?
Behind the pump is the forward clutch assembly which is the shaft in the center of the pump. I would look into this before going on to another part of the car. If thebody is off then it's not too bad to get the tranny out again to take a closer look.
Gary
Gary, no I haven't put power to it yet and yes the body is still off. I have filled it with transmission fluid. I had a local shop rebuild it and I installed a new torque converter. Not sure if the clicking sound was there before I screwed up the torque converter installation or not. I had hoped to be able to remove the transmission this weekend and take a closer look but my return home has been delayed a couple more weeks. Thanks for the tip on the parking pawl I'll check that if I don't see any damage behind the torque converter. I let you know what I find. :auto:
The best thing you can do now is either bring it back to the place that rebuilt it or invest in the TH400 video that JC Whitney and Eastwoods carry. For $30 it will walk you through the whole rebuild process and hopefully you'll find out if you have a problem.
Good luck,
Gary
