After working on my 74 for a year and a half I finnaly get to drive it. Well 200 miles later back to work. When I pulled it out of the garage the other day there was a loud clicking noise comming from the rear end (only going forward) so I backed it back into the garage and came to the forum to see if could find the proper fix. It sounded like a u joint binding up so I cahnged all 4 in the rear end only finding one that was bad. Got the car back together last night pulled out of the garage sounds good drove at a slow speed about 1/4 mile and I hear a bang comming from the rear of the car so I stop and look I cant see any thing (it was a dirt road I thought maybe a rock kicked up) so I kept going. I went 1 mile and turned around when I was almost home another loud bang came from the rear of the car this time I was going 40 mph and I could really feel it in the car. I stoped and looked and still cant see any thing. Now I need help where should I go next? Rear end fluid if full I put posi additive in it side yokes have some play not much. I did pull the brakes off and spin the roter it spins free. Other than the banging noise the rear end is not whining or making any other noise. :banghead:
lift car off ground (SAFELY) INSPECT while things are turning... make sure
you don't get in a hurry and get hurt........ Without a load on things you may not find
need more info please. were you driving straight, turning, going over bumpy roads, flat roads? did you hear it when you let off the gas or while you were accelerating? You did the u-joints but did you do the pinion bushing? Are you sure you torqued it correctly? Hows the spring look? Is it arched, flat? Did you install the strut rod bushings correctly w/the reducing washers on them(bracket under rear)?
Driving straight on a flat smooth road at a constant speed. I didnt do the pinion bushing. Spring looks ok but Im new to vettes and not sure. Its not flat still looks to have a good arch to it. I didnt do any thing to the strut rod ends yet.
To me it sounds like something didn't set in right when you put it back together. I would go and check your u-joints again. Make sure they are seated properly in the the yokes. Make sure non of the snap-rings poped out either. To hear a loud bang in the rear pretty much narrows it down to either the diff or the u-joints. If it were the strut rods you would most likely here a metal to metal rattling. Snubber bushing is the same as pinion bushing. It's the bushing in front of the diff. Just 2 different names. Your t-arms wouldn't make a bang unless you snapped the spindles. If you want, call me after you check everything out and we can go over everything you did. It's much easier than typing everything out. 800-418-5397 my name is Dan
I have the same simular thing going on except that mine happens in reverse. The person I brought my vette from says that the rear has a chipped tooth. So I'm looking at redoing my rear. I have the origional 3.08's and I'm thinking about going with 355's.
My vette's a 72 auto. 350
Thanks Dan your help you where right. One of the u-joints was not tight enough. I put a jack under the control arm to put it in a position where it would be if a wheel where on it(and on the ground). Than I torqued the u-joint bolts. Worked like a charm Thanks for telling where to look Dan.

My car does the same - click, click in reverse. Has for several years. If you find out what it is for sure, I would be interested in knowing.
