5.) The "new blood running the machine" option (that would be Kerry) is against drilling for oil in Alaska's arctic national wildlife area. You want mega-barrels of cheap oil? There is is. By the way, the "new blood" option also suggested increasing tax on gas.
You said it. We can't drill our own, and somehow or another raising the tax on gas will cure the cost problem??????? Makes all kinds of sense to me.
I was watching the news here if florida. I think they said that 38 cents a gallon are taxes for the fed, and another 26 were local taxes.
Not only that, but I have a friend who owns a local gas station/repair shop, and he posted the price of gas and the taxes on gas separately, then put the total below that on his pumps and got in trouble with some government agency or another.......aparantly there's a law against that. That's how the "elected officials" can tax gas as high as they want and nobody seems to care.....they make it really difficult to find out just what that tax is. Not that there isn't more to this gas price problem, but that is some of it. OK, I'm done now.:D
Once it hits a certain level you will see syn gas magically appear, if we can syn oil then I am sure we can syn gas but it is prolly much too expensive to be viable right now.
I would question the statement that the USA is the largest "producer" of oil. Perhaps you are referring to refining capacity from imported crude.
The U.S. is actually the second largest, at least in 2000. Saudi Arabia barely edged over the U.S. in 2000, some other reports however say the US is over Saudi Arabia in oil production. Note the very few OPEC countries in the top 10, that suprised me.
Top World Oil Producers, 2000*
Country ** Production Estimates (million bbl/d) ***
1) Saudi Arabia 9.12
2) United States 9.08 (5.83 of which was crude oil)
I burned over a 1/2 tank of $2.30/gallon 91 octane in 75 miles on Saturday. My '69 is not the most fuel efficient car in the world -- but I have less than 1000 miles on it in 20 months of ownership.
On the other hand, my C5 gets 30mpg when I take it to Seattle and back!
:iagree: yeah, kind of easy to shout you want higher gas prices...let's talk again when it reaches 6$. It may seem like a way to get the gas guzzlers off the road but even with an econobox the weekly fill up gets to be a large chunk out of your budget. But, we can trade, I'll send you our expensive gas, you can send me your cheap stuff :)
Getting gas guzzlers off the road was not my point about higher prices. None of my cars get over 16 mpg anyway. People are going to drive what they want to drive, regardless of what gas costs. I don't care if it's $6 a gallon, no way am I risking my life to drive a 45 mpg crackerbox on wheels in order to save a few bucks.
What I was saying is that all these people are complaining about how "high" gas prices are here, when they're cheaper than anywhere else in the world, and as cheap as they've ever been (adjusted for inflation). During the early 80s, gas prices were $5-6 a gallon in today's dollars. I think it's silly to complain about it when we've got it better than anybody else already.
I was not replying to you. It's always easy to speculate what you may or may not think about it when prices get that high, until you actually have to pay it. 6$ a gallon is simply rediculous, no one should have to pay that much. It's pure theft, driven up even further by rediculous taxes. And they find it strange that more and more people drive away from gas stations without paying.

Re: Getting hard to afford a C3? (Twin_Turbo)
Geroge W Bush needs to go. I am no fan of Kerry, but Bush and company have made a mess out of this country.
All he is worried about is the Iraq people. We live in a country were health care is out of control, gas is going up by the hour, jobs are leaving in record numbers.
American people need to come first since we pay the taxes where the government gets their money. I as a taxpayer DO NOT want one dollar of my money going to Iraq.
Instead of Bush and Michael Powell leading a witch hunt to get Howard Stern off the radio, he should withdraw all of the troops out of Iraq and leave them to fend for themselves.
Look, our feds are screwed up terminally in lotsa ways, but no damn NEAR what the rest of the world is....by comparo...we got it made...crybabies aside..
Like I have been saying all along, the true price of gas worldwide is around 79 cents/gallon....US measure....now the rest is taxes...pure and simple....
didn't SAY what any other place DOES with that tax money....WE mostly choose to build roads and highways......and so just exactly WHAT is the matter with that??? shut up Ralph Nader......
What are you guys complaining about?? The price of gasoline is still cheaper than a gallon of milk, a gallon of paint, a gallon of beer, or even cheaper than a gallon of bottled water!!
As the fuel economy of cars has just about doubled over the past 20 years the increasing numbers of Trucks and FUV's in the mix has more than offset the fuel economy gain so that net fuel economy improvements on the total US vehicle population has been about zero!! Add in the fact that Americans are driving 3 times as far per year on average than they did 20 years ago and it doesn't take a genius to figure the increase in our fuel consumption.
I get a laugh out of people like Mr. Kerry (Mr. Scary IMO) trashing the auto industry for not doing enough to offer economical, fuel efficient vehicles and when asked about the Suburban that parks in the Kerry driveway he replies: "....uuuh...that's my wife's car."
- Gasoline is the same price the world over. The retail price varies by the amount of tax added on...
- One major reason for the recent price hikes is the increasing use of petroleum by China (over a billion people...), and they aren't concerned about the environment
- To our buddies in Europe: You may complain about high gas prices, but they are more than evened out by cheap booze prices. I was in France & Italy recently and wine that would be about $20/bottle was about $5 there!! :yesnod:
At least Bush is not having sex on the floor of the white house, and not running around after every woman with his pants down, and not a embarrassment.
Hey if that's what it takes to get my quality of life back to nineties levels- I'm all for it." Something ain't right, all those who refuse to recognize the fleecing of the middle class and the consolidation of even more resources by the ultra-rich/corportate/****** are burying their heads in the sand. Stop rationalizing the most inept CEO er president, and the most corrupt administration the U.S. has had in decades.
Back to gas prices though, its 2.39 here in Ventura too. There's something fishy in California.. it's just too high in relation to the rest of the already high prices around the country.
Also I'm sure many don't agree with my views, especially here on this forum.. So I reserve the right to express my opinion as an AMERICAN. Thank you and goodnight.
Because I have too much compression I have to run avgas. Last 44 cost me $300 here in Australia. Next one will be $320. Thats about $7 a gallon. Does it stop me owning a big block or looking for more power? No. But I only go for a short but sweet drive on Sunday and I am looking at ways to improve economy without hurting power eg overdrive and injection. Will eventually build a 10/1 motor that will run on premium not to save money but to give me the ability to one day drive out of town and test out our no speed limit roads in the Northern Territory. Premium 92 costs $1.07 litre today.
We all need to think about lowering greenhouse emissions. I work for scientists and know that global warming will cause major problems in our country Australia. But it is mostly a lost cause as China desperately tries to copy the western worlds high personal use of energy.
Z-Man,
You make a good point. The international price of world-wide crude is about $40.00US/barrel today. That's market price. Then the various countries add taxes.
Bush has put the Al Qeada type p-ussies on the run for now and broken many of their avenues of operation. We are over there to mix it up so they are not able to organize at a high level and become a problem for the rest of the globe.
If you dont see that, your missing the whole point. Id rather have us fighting over there than them coming over here!!
IMHO that operation could be handled efficiently with no quarter by the military with limited press involvement and the rest of the the US govt can focus on economic reforms that kickstart things back into high gear. All economies are cyclic though and I think we are back on the upswing for sure.
The big picture is what is important. Time for a beer and a steak!
I don't drive my C3 enough for it to really matter. But I have to say, when I'm getting 8mpg on stuff that costs over $2.00/gallon. Well, I think about getting rid of her.
