Don't know of any links but I can tell you that I have a set on my 78. Clearance is an issue. I have an aftermarket L88 high rise hood and the new intake and carb just barely cleared. I had to use a two inch K & N air filter instead of the stock set up. I want to post some pictures as soon as my son gets home from college with the digital camera.
The clearance with the hood depends on which intake you use. On my 1980, I used a Vortec Edelbrock performer (not RPM) and it cleared with minor trimming on the stock dual snorkel air filtre.
I like my hood because it is a stock-size hood with louvers in it so if it came down to a new hood, I'd consider other heads. Stephan, I was looking at an Edelbrock Performer and am surprised (and a little happy) to hear that it works under a stock hood. You're operating with the manufacturer's hood and not a L88 High-rise aren't you? If so, good times, because I'm losing the stock snorkel anyway.
I'm running vortecs with edelbrock vortec performer intake and 2.5" open air filter with about 1/4" to 1/2" clearance to the stock hood on a 1980. If you are going to open air filter, I would suggest a drop down base to gain a little extra clearance. One you have the heads and air filter on, use some playdoe to check clearance.
I'm also running the Vortecs. I'm using the triangular Edelbrock lo pro. Works pretty well, but I question the filter's ability to do its job. And I've heard of the foam elements catching fire.
im using them also. but im using the performer rpm, edelbrock eps800 carb and a drop base air cleaner w/ 3" filter. no clearance problem with the stock 80 hood here, but its very close.
400 Hp! That's not modest at all. I'm hoping to get there someday, which is why I'm going with a level 2 700R4 from Bowtie. So to be sure on the manifold guys I'm looking at part #'s 2116 or 21161 from this old website (example) http://www.rjays.com/Edelbrock/Performer-01.htm :beatdeadhorse:
