Default tach reading too high

Hello everyone, I wanted to find out about my tach readings, I have a 78, and my tach readings are way off, like it says 5000rpm at 30mph, and so forth. I pulled the needle off and set it to read correctly at idle, but still while crusing its way off. I dont have a tach filter on the car, is the filter a resistor or something that makes the tach read lower, or is the filter just to knock out erractic readings?
Thanks for any help.

My tach acts squirrely sometimes, too. Mine will read what I believe to be correctly most of the time, but sometimes at slow idle or when the car is stopped and in gear it will read really low, like 100rpm or so. Give it a little gas and it perks right back up to where it belongs.

Had the same issue. I ordered the Wilcox Corvette Tach Repair PC Board and installed it and that fixed the
issue. Very happy with the results. Tachometer now reads correctly.
