Default Door "thud"

Is there a trick to getting the new car solid "thud" sound back when closing the doors? I know replacing the door glass rubber channeling and greasing the door hinges should somehow help, but is there anything else behind the door panels, like rubber washers or insulation perhaps?

The door striker is a metal rod with rubber insulation, then a metal sleeve over that. The rubber can deteriorate and fall out. If this happens the door will close and rattle a bit. Cars with metal doors sound tinny if the skins werent undercoated.

Put sound deadening sheets on the inside of the door. Make sure your doors can't move when latched.

Last weekend I adjusted the striker (needs a T55 I think) to get the door panel to be flush with the body. Seems to have made a slight difference in the thud sound. It also made it so that I have to give it a bit more push to get it to close. Not slam it or anything, but it now closes tight against the weatherstripping. The subtle difference in look between flush fitting and off-by-a-bit is worth the door closing effort.

This is a great question, because it was the first project I undertook on my 73.

consider these possibilites:

1. new weatherstriping.
2. or window anti-rattle bumpers that are inside the door.
3. check the door lock mech. for more anti rattle bumpers on the lock rods.
4. exterior door channel sweeper that can lose their grip.

I say that the door striker is probaly the least probable contributor to a "wimpy" door. If you tune upe the door assembly you will be very satifised when you shut the door at a show, for instance.
