So far I have replaced the lower cable which was definitely broken. It worked fine for about 2 weeks then started fluctuating so I replaced the Transducer. The "expert", my local garage had to replace the lower cable (not the housing) because the one I bought was just too short for the new unit. He said there must have been a spacer in there to keep it in securely. Anyway, I worked for about two hours but was fluctuating like mad then died completely. Now, when I go over a bump in the road, the speedo needle jumps. The "expert" says it's my speedo head but NObody sells these things anymore and I don't know if I believe him anyway.
ANY help would be appreciated. I know I know. I could do without forever, but I just bought the lifetime alignment deal from Firestone and I can only stop in every 5,000 miles for an alignment. Well if I don't put miles on the car I can't stop in and I wasted the money. Besides Memphis cops like to give tickets to my car. Not to me just to my car. Of course I have to pay for my car's infractions.
I doubt this is your problem, but my speedo was not working when I bought my 76 last month, cable had melted against the exhaust... I replaced the cable and had intermittent operation for a short time when it quit altogether again. I spun it with a drill at tranny and it was working fine.... so I then pulled the driven speedo gear out. it looked like new.... so I pulled out the drive shaft and pulled the tail housing off to find the retainer clip holding the drive gear had broke and allowed the gear to slide back on the shaft to the point it wouldn't turn the speedo driven gear. Replaced the clip and fixed the problem. Alot of work for something so simple. Good Luck.....
I'm in Milwaukee and there is a local shop here in town that has NOS parts stocks. They rebuilt, lubed and calibrated my '69 speedo/odo and trip odo for about $100 using genuine NOS parts from their inventory.
