Awesome. Just watched it again, it's good for motivation (which I have needed as of late).

Nice!!

I'm curious to know, how did you deal with the F-body accessory set up, and what did you do for the motor mounts??

Thanks!
Matt

That is so cool. Congratulations! I'm thinking that an LS1 is in my future so I've been paying attention. Good job.

Budman78 was my motivation but he dropped the ball (and bought a new house in the process) so I got mine started first!!! Keep at it.

I used the F-body crank pulley and tensioner (actually I bought the Katech tensioner from the C5R because the stock one sucks). Then I made the alternator bracket that you can see on the car. 70LS1 (Jeff) did the original design work on that one when he first did his swap. There are companies that sell them, but they want like $250. I made mine for ~$30 in aluminum and a few hours of my time.

Thanks for all the comments!! Hopefully I'll be driving the car around town tomorrow afternoon. I just have a few loose ends to tie up.

How much weight savings do you end up with?(as opposed to an iron SB with aluminum heads, intake, & water pump)

I'm not positive but I've heard a couple hundred pounds from an all-iron stock setup isn't out of the question. If you already have aluminum heads, intake, and water pump, the only big difference would be the block and that's probably somewhere in the area of 80-100# savings.

Congratulations! What Trans did you end up using? I'm planning on doing this to my 68 Camaro.

Did you pull the engine from a junked Camaro or did you buy it new?

It's a stock T56 for an LS1 F-body. The engine came from a wrecked 2000 Trans Am.

I finally drove the car around the block this afternoon!! It was great. I can't wait to see what 6800 feels like. I'm going to try to keep it under 4k for the first few hundred miles...

Default My earlier prayers have been answered

Keeping on the LS1 topic and to those contemplating an LS1 install in the future (myself included), someone finally came out with a carbureted intake manifold for the LS1. The September '04 issue of Car Craft has an article about swapping Gen. III blocks out of platforms you would find them in.

Edelbrock has their carbureted intake manifold out already, it allows you to, "...still use the coil-near-plug ignition with a conversion box." Also, "Finally, GM Performance Parts is close to releasing a carbureted intake manifold and a front cover that will mount a distributor to light the plugs." pp. 72-75; quotes on pg. 75.

If you go to the Edelbrock website (Automotive Parts -> Intake Manifolds -> Chevy LS1), their manifold made 410 HP and 418 TQ in dyno tests using one of their carbs and camshafts.

Why would I (or anyone else) wish to carburete an LS1? For the simplicity. I've already got a perfectly good carburetor and I can find LS1 blocks with heads for le$$ than I can pick up a complete LS1; plus I'd have to do the rest of the conversion to fuel injection with a complete LS1. Further on down the road my goal is to have a SBC 427 made out of an LS1 or LS2/LS6/LS7...? But that's a good decade away yet.

Hey Scooter, where did you locate the ECM? Also, where did you pull the power for the ignition coils?
