STEERING GEARBOX
Who can i send this out to,
to make me a better box than it is now?
I think I would rather stay with my suspension
than go with STEEROIDS, but I do like their setup
Corvette Steering Service in VA gets my vote too! You may want to look into their new intregal P.S. box, I am going to try one! Scroll down the page and the answer to our dillemma is there! Here's the link: http://www.corvettesteering.com/55-57%20chevy.htm
Look at what you're going to get from the rebuilder you talk to. Most places install the standard rebuild kit. Ask them if they check the pitman shaft to bushing play. Ask how they set it up. I set them to .001-.002" max, the kit bushings come out to about .005". These boxes can be setup to be tight and responsive but for what's involved I haven't seen one for $100. Thats my cost in materials alone, less any labor.
I agree with gtr1999. Anyone can clean up the unit and paint it, install new bearings, seats and seals but it is the pitman shaft to bushings that is the problem and this must be addressed along with pitman end play.
Most rebuilds don't worry about this and they should.

Re: STEERING GEARBOX (norvalwilhelm)
GTR1999 thats what i want, a tight box!!
I did not want to spend 700.00 on a different box.
If I rebuild my own, is it just common sense, or
do i need special tools? one shop said my internals were
wornout, thats why i had so much play :confused
could this have happened from not running my powersteering
The Ebay steering box listed above is in my Ebay store. Everything is checked and if it is out of spec it will be brought within spec. I'm offering these and other parts at an affordable price to help Corvette owners save some money and it brings me some part-time income at the same time.

So do you set them up to GM spec's, or better. I want the attention
done to my box like what GTR1999 is talking about. But then how do
you know when this is really done , you don't.
I just posted, so I can get a company that most here might trust
I think with a box done the rite way, I will run powersteering
I'll email you the paper I wrote and IM you with some more information.
I don't know a thing about the steeroids conversion that was/is sold here. I don't even know the cost, but a properly setup stock system should last and function for years. One of the problems is with the rebuilt control valves on the market, it's a crap shoot to see if you'll get a good one or bad one.
The PS Control valve and pump will not damage the box. The same box is used for manual and PS vettes. Your shop said the internal parts were worn out? Did they take it apart to inspect or try to adjust the lash screw on the top of the box? If they overtighened it, the pitman sector and worm lash could be too tight on center and roll the teeth. This would not happen right away but over a very short time it could. If that's the case then yes the gears are shot and the box isn't worth rebuilding. The cost of a new worm and pitman shaft are too expensive unless you want to maintain the originality of the car in that respect.

I just wanted to let you know the initial link was for my auction/ebay store. For Corvette Forum's sake I'll recommend you use a supporting vendor. I am no longer one but Troy has not removed the tag from my profile. As far as what I am offering, the boxes are set up to perform like new. If anything needs to be replaced it will be done. If someone wants a brand new box these will be available in about 30 days.
I am still in the process of rebuilding mine right now. It is labor-intensive but not rocket science. Access to a machine shop with a lathe and a press makes the job fun.
I tried to machine my own bushings and eventually learned that I clamped the jaws too tight and ended up with funky tri-lobed bushings that were undersize (measure ok with inside mic, but they sure don’t fit). Then I tried the bushings supplied with the kit and they actually fit quite nice once pressed into the housing with less than .002” side play.
I made my own shim for the lash adjuster, gap is .0015”. I also replaced the bushing in the cap.
So I left the shop tonight frustrated because the wormshaft is not spinning smoothly once in the housing. I might have cocked a bearing race or something because the worm nut moves quite freely on its own. Maybe debris.
My pitman shaft was pretty worn too so once I do get it back together and adjusted, it may still be inadequate.
I am putting the steeroids system on my vette, right now... once she finally goes back together, I will let you all now how it is.... here is a photo though...

VanSteel seems to run a good shop - I wonder if they are aware of this and whether they do this procedure?
