Default All C3s are now going up.

Corvette Enthusiat magazine published the CPI price guides for all Corvettes. According to CPI all C3s, no matter the year or engine, are now going up in value. The optional engine models outperformed base models. The 68 Convertible L89 had the best percentage increase over ANY CORVETTE (not just C3s) at 26.4% annual increase. A 75 base engine coupe went up 9.09% in just one year.

I'd rather have the prices go down so I can buy another if I choose. I don't plan on ever selling. They are only worth what people are willing to pay. So quit being willing to pay so much!

Would you guys agree that heavily modified vettes are a much harder sell than stock original ones? I had my vette in the paper for over a month and advertised online, and I got several calls, but when they heard it was modified they all lost interest. Not a single person came out to look at it. Luckily that was just long enough for me to change my mind and decide to keep it But is that just typical that people are more interested in restos than modifieds?

Its all a matter of taste, but I have to admit, I've in the past not looked at modifieds myself. I personally like to buy close to stock. Mod myself. I passed up a 79 once for $2900.00 cause it was MASSIVELY modified, and all though it looked pretty cool, and he had an original rear clip to go back to original, it was barely recognizable as a vette. It actually looked very close to the batmobile from the movies. I just couldn't bare the thought of all the work to make it closer to a corvette, not to mention the car must have weighed in at close to double its original weight with HUGE amounts of very thick fiberglass. For the right person, they would have jumped on it. The worst part of it was the hatchback lid which was a 1/2" thick plexi-glass sheet that went from roof all the way to end of bumper and Trans-am tail-lights. I saw one as a stationwagon once too....TERRIBLE!!!! But most people do not do all those kind of mods to make it worth more to sell it, they build "their" car for "them". I can appreciate those who do it, imagination, creativity, and just plain having fun, but it is not great for an investment, its a fun hobby project. But you could ask 100 people the same question and get a hundred different answers too I suppose, and I'm no expert, I've been a vette owner for 3 months. I have always been a 60's Impala and Chevelle freak, and have owned quite a few of them. I only recently bought a 67 Camaro, and of course now my 76 Vette.

Hi Stephanie,
I would have to think twice about a modified vette, You may have the perfect modified 68, but for your one, there are 1000 68's that have been bubba'd.

You and I will be setting on ours for a while. I am going to have to hang on to mine until I am 85 and sell it to make out.

I agree, I've seldom looked at modified cars and have always gone with an origianl car...no surprise by my sig

...however, if I buy a second vette some day I will look for a modified car to play with. I love my car now but feel like my hands are somewhat tied because the car is so original. If I were to pick up a modified car I could go into a no holds barred mode; with exception to budget of course.

I paid $2150.00 for my 81 coupe five years ago. I don't think that it will ever be worth less than that.

Published price guides have to be taken with a grain of salt and not relied upon too heavily. Corvette prices vary across the country. Private sale prices are almost always lower than what one will see published in a price guide. It's almost certainly true to say C3 values have increased. It's also true to say C1 and C2 values have increased.

Numbers matching never mattered to me honestly I look for the modified cars because they are typically less expensive and I know they will perform better than most stock. When I bought my 77 3 people called the day I picked it up to take a look and 1 guy showed up as I was writing the check to the previous owner and it is pretty heavily modified but then again it was a great deal even with all the little crap that needs to be done.

I'd be afraid to thrash on a numbers car out of fear of destroying it whereas a modified car I can thrash out and have a blast and not have to worry about affecting it's value. The only numbers cars I would own would probably be a 67 427 or 69 427 tripower just because they are AWESOME cars that were built for some abuse and they are one of the few cars that are truley an investment that can't help but go up in value.

Stock always gets you more money. The other rule is the Vette you buy today may be the Vette you sell tomorrow. The lesson is pay a little more for one which will hold or increase its value over time. Beyond that, my plan for my next Vette is one I can do anything to; for fun. I would love to build a C3 with a modern drive train. that project fasciantes me!

According to the article, the C1 and C2 prices have "matured". The percentage growth vettes appear to be the C3s. C4s before 1988 are modestly increasing. The later C4s and all the C5s are still decreasing in value as much as 10% a year.

That is why I put the 75 price in -- to show that all C3s are now appreciating in value.
