Default Antenna question

I just replaced the radio antenna. I noticed 2 differences. 1-it's a little shorter. 2-the ball at the top is smaller then the original. The new one is nicer looking, but not as much of a difference as I thought it would be. My questions are....are the original ones hard to find? Do they make a "correct" repo? Should I put the original back on, or keep it in a safe place for later down the road? Thanks to all who help.

Tony,

The correct original power antenna's are very hard to find in working condition. But from what I've been told there are repro's on the way for all the 1978-1982 antenna's.

I would use the one you have on the car. Keep the original. And keep an eye our for the reproductions.

I'm assuming that with a 71, you don't have a power antenna. Dosn't look like one in your sig pic, just a typical "screw on" mast.

Wish I could help you more as I also need to replace mine and would be interested in what others post about this topic as I didn't know the repos were shorter. I will be and keeping an eye on this thread to see what info is provided.

Good Luck!

It a fixed mast antenna, not a power one. Any one else have any input I can't find anything in the books.

if you measure (antenna whip installed) from the top of the LARGE chrome nut of the mount (not the smaller nut on the whip)- to the top of the ball ; it should be 31 inches.

This was the length that Delco Electronics had for their non-telescoping "FM optimized" antenna.

as for ball diameter, I just measured an original whip and it is 0.3 inches.

.

The repo one measures 30 inches and the ball is 0.2 inches. Not even close to the original. I wonder how many cars lost points on judging because of this. Or maybe it didn't get noticed.

Every car with a repo antenna will lose judging points....trust me I know. I just found one on ebay. Orginals are very difficult to find and no one makes a correct repo, so I would not throw it away......use it or keep it in a safe place.

make sure you measure length from the top of the mount chrome nut - not the hold-down nut on the whip itself.
