Spring replacement (front)
Have new springs and have discovered the spring compressor I have won't work. Has anyone ever used the "floor jack & chain" method? Good idea? Bad idea?

Shouldn't be a problem, as long as the chain is secure and the car is high enough to allow the jack to lower the A-arm enough to remove the spring.
Might be a good time to check the a-arm bushings, etc....

I hope you're replacing it with a 460 or 550 spring, then you won't have to worry about chaining it ever again.
VB&P sells an internal spring compressor that will work too, and you can rent those from Autozone I believe. Give them a call.
You have to make sure to it's an internal type, not the external type for working on MacPherson struts.

Thnx for the input.
Am going w/ the stock replacements. (Eckler's #34786). I drove a car similar to mine with the 460's and felt they were a bit too harsh. Imagination? Coulda been... Anyway will also be replacing all 4 shocks with KYB's, so the ride should be somewhat improved.
BTW: RF spring on car now is broken at 2nd coil from bottom. NOT good.
