Default Door Spring Replacement

OK - somebody here must have replaced an "S" door spring at some point. Its the spring that holds the door open. I have done the searchs on the forum, but have not found anything.

I've got the new spring and even sprung $13 for the "must have to install spring tool" (bent screwdriver) - but alas - no instructions included.

So, if you have done this, or can refer to a prior post - I would appreciate it.

Thanks - JME

I too have the springs, and don't know how they go in. And of course I don't have the tool either.

Check that article. I have done the job and have the tool which really works. Follow the instructions and you will get it. All of a sudden the planets will align and pop! the spring drops in.

By the way, some where in that web site they show you how to make the "tool" out of an old screwdriver.

I've done a few of these and it's not hard at all. Refer to the tech/Q&A section and/or the articles referenced above. I made my own tool out of an old screwdriver and it works like a champ.

Two things not in instructions-

1- Put towel or old tee shirt below spring to catch it when it drops to protect your paint.

2- Make sure the neighbor lady isn't working close by in her yard when you get mad at the spring and "talk" to it.

It's real easy once you have the tool. The tool allows you to flex the spring. Drop the sring into the hole on top; flex the spring so it lines up with the bottom hole, then tap it up with a small hammer. Once in, the tension holds it in place.

LOL about "talking to it" - You've clearly done this before!

Finaaly got my driver's side door spring installed last night. It only took three different attempts. First two ended in frustration, but after reading this thread, decided it was time to try again. Third time was a charm. It is great not having the door bang my knee every time I get out of the vette.

Mike - that's cool it worked out for you.

I had to "walk away" for a little while...

I'll try again tomorrow.

Took a couple of trys but now I'm in. Its nice to not have the door swinging back on you all the time. The directions in the tech tips were probably as good as you can get, but I still had to read them a few times to figure it all out. Maybe it's more user error...

One recommendation - wrap the spring tool with a few layers of masking tape, from handle to just before the bend in the tool - it saved my door from damage on two occassions during the installation process.
