Default I think I broke it...

Well I set the timing and replaced all of the plug wires.. Timing was way off. I set it and it started right up. The distributor was still loose so I went to tighten it up. then the car would not start. I kept adjusting and trying to start and now she won't start for me. I had to keep recharging the battery, then finally I heard a very loud noise like the flywheel broke a tooth. I checked the flywheel, but no broken teeth. Not sur what that loud noise is, but I cannot get it to turn over more than once without it jummping back and making that horrible noise. Does anyone have a clue to what this might be?

Okay this sounds bad. Check the starter mounting section of the block, When you have your timing waaay advanced and you start uyou can get the engine to kick back on the starter breaking off the starter mount right from the block

The starter teeth are much softer than the flywheel, designed as a sacrificial item. Easier to replace the starter than the flywheel. Check the starter teeth, if their worn sometimes they get jammed on the flywheel.

Good Luck.

Default Well when I got home...

The vette started right up. I set the timing let it warm up and was so very excited...THEN when I shut it off I tried to restart. Cranks but does not start. It seems to be alot louder when it is cranking, almost schreeching, but not like it is grinding on the flywheel. When it cranks, the engine is definatly turning over and the fan is turning, but after I tried it a few times the fan (and assuming the crank) jumped backwards and smoke came out of the carb. Anyone have any ideas. :flag

it still sounds like your timing is way off. either too advanced or to far back.
