Default Smelling Gas

Ever since I installed the Edelbrock 650 thunder I've had the smell of gas in the garage. I've checked all of the fittings and the new fuel pump...no leaks. Could the carb be running rich?

Around the same time I removed the vapor canister eliminating the hose to the carb and plugging the other (believe it goes to the gas tank). Could this be causing it?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Ed

Yes. The gas tank should vent to the vapor canister. You would need a vented gas cap otherwise.

With a vented gas cap, I would think you would get a gas smell since the vapors would vent from the cap. With a sealed cap and a proper functioning vapor cannister system, the charcoal is supposed to trap the vapors until you start the car. From there, the vacuum produced is supposed to suck the vapors into the engine to be burned off. Seeing as you removed or unhooked your vapor cannister, I'm assuming that is why you have a gas smell.
