Just cut my Fram open a couple nights ago and found the collar between the filter media and threaded area was misaligned when it was assembled crushing the collar allowing oil to bypass. Also noted a fair section of filter media missing at the crimp where the media is connected with the steel band. That will be the last Fram I purchase. It will be WIX from here on out.
We ONLY use WIX, 90% of the men in my family work in the Oil industry (Shell, Exxon, BP, etc) and if a WIX filter is good for a 10,000,000 dollar engine it's good enough for my BB.
The first thing i checked when I saw my pressure guage "Flutter" was the oil level..... Full
The engine sounded normal ... I listen to my car ... no tunes don't need 'em
I remember reading about Fram oil filter problems, I'll swap out the filter AFTER I put an oil pressure guage on her tomarrow & let you know what happened... at 31 yrs old (my car not me) it could be anything!!!
when i hooked up my oil pressure guage a big glob of schmutz came out of the line to the guage... pressure within specs, replaced filter anyway with an AC Delco. pressure 8 psi higher (added 1 qt new oil). Guage now reads normal I really thought I'd be replacing the oil pump this weekend...now I can
JC, the exact same thing happened to me and my F-350 351 V-8. I have 318k miles with no work on the engine, and the first time I put a Fram on it about a month ago, I had erratic pressure down to 3 psi. I also thought I would have to change the oil pump, but a mechanic saw the Fram, told me he had heard Frams would do that, and we put a CarQuest on. The oil pressure shot right back up to normal and I haven't had a problem since then. Apparently this is fairly common, or the mechanic would not have heard about it and noticed that I had a Fram filter.
Are the Fram HP4 filters any better than the standard ones?? It's supposed to be hipo/race filter (I have one in my car now, no problems so far...).
The HP is a HI Pressure Hi Volume filter designed for racing with a high volume of oil going through them. I have used an HP1 for years even though they are pricey. This is in an aircooled VW type 1 all other filters would explode lol. But then again it has 10 quarts of oil going through it lol. I have liked the HP-1 myself. But I am always open for ideas.
