Default A/C Conversion questions

For those that have done a R12 to R134a conversion, a couple of questions...

1. Will a new compressor hose work with R134a, or do I have to get a special
kind of hose? I've heard that used hoses will hold R134a. I have to get a
new hose as mine has a leak.

2. Has anyone gotten the adjustible orifice tube? What's the benefit for $20
extra dollars?

3. I saw that they have a simple single gauge ($20) for use in filling the system
with R134a. What am i missing if I get this vs. using a dual gauge setup?

One place I read said they used the engine to create a vaccuum source to dry
the system once sealed. Anyone use a shop to get the system vaccuumed out?
What did it cost you?

Thanks all.

1. If you have to get a new hose, it has to be certified for R-134. An old used R-12 hose works because the microscopic holes have been plugged with oil, and R-12 molecules. If you use a new hose made for R-12, the R-134 will bleed right through the hose.
2. Don't know never used one
3. You need to pull 25 inches of vacuum, or more, so I don't think an engine will work. I bought a vacuum pump, split the cost with a couple of my buddies. but I can't imagin a shop charging very much to evacuate the system for you.

I think most new hoses today are 134a compatible.
I sprang for the variable orifice valve but later learned that a ford blue valve would work just as well.
Buy a full set of gauges so you can get both low and high side readings, if your going to do it yourself, get the tool that allows you to do it right.
I bought a simple venturi style vacuum pump off ebay for about 35$.
Works fine if your compressor can manage 8 or 9 cfm for a while.

3. If you don't evacuate both the high and low sides, you will still have air in there and the high side readings will be much higher than they have to be.
