1970 454 big block has been running on 10W 30 for as long as I know (4 years), is it prudent to switch over to synthetic or will that do more harm than good. I have used Slick 50 a couple of times. Just trying to do anything that will improve the life of the engine

Couple searches under 'syn', 'synthetic' or even 'oil' and you will have a months worth of reading.

A quality synthetic oil is a good idea. Some report leaks when switching but it is mostly a thing of the past. Nowadays synthetics have seal swelling agents that duplicate what regular oil does for seals.
Slick 50 is a bad idea and I recommend against it. Best case it does nothing. Worst case it will plug up the oil filter, pickup screen and oil galleries.
