Not a bad spot to mount an 8", but if I were gonna install subs, I'd ditch the rear speakers, and mount them back there with some custom fab cutting. Cleaner, and you really don't wanna lose that storage space, since it's not very plentiful in our cars anyways...
I replaced the 3 doors with a single door. I mounted 3 DVC 8" subwoofers on it. Top is carpeted and there are just slots cut to give any indication that there are speakers in there. Sounds great, hardly noticable.

I am running the same sub as M-N Brent. It is a great little compact unit with plenty of power for the little cabin of an '80 and gives the 6X9s the oomph that they lack. If you are looking to rattle your licensce plate or make yourself sterile from low end, then this is not the sub for you. I dig it because I don't loose any of the precious T-top storage real estate to acres of amps and drivers usually associated with subs. Infinity makes a similar setup to the WooX but it is a little bit bigger. I believe it is called the Basslink. It was too tall to mount where mine is mounted, very similar to MN-Brent's location. The Woox also comes with a little wired remote so you can dial in how much sub you want in relation to your other speakers, as well four selectable frequency roll off points and wheather the sub is firing in phase, or 180 degrees out of phase with your other speakers.
A Friend of mine built this speaker box - really looks great and sounds AWESOME.. I have had it for a 1 year or so. He said that he would do more if there are interests.
I installed a Bazooka 8" sub with built in amp in the storage space of my '82, held down with velcro straps anchored to be back. The sound is great, I have the sub volume at about 1/4, any higher than that and the doors start bulging.
I have a 10" in the storage compartment, it's a very tight fit, 8 incher should be much easier to install. I made a glassfiber enclosure for the sub and just dropped it in there.
MN-Brent CVT4ME- Thanks so much guys for your information. Last spring I decided that when I got the time this fall, that I was gonna overhaul my speaker system in my '80. I've got two six by nines in the back, two four by six's in the dash and two round fours in the kick panels. I was LUSTING after the wOOx but I didn't know if it was worth the $230.00 asking price. I could use any advice on replacing the other speakers. My system is 15 years old. The head unit is an old JVC cassette player 4x20 watts that fits the console panel properly and it goes through a tiny amp in the glove box at 4x200 watts. Orignally the system was very strong 15 years ago. So I wanna replace my speakers and add a wOOx. ANY advice on replacement speakers would be muchly appreciated.

that is exactly what I'm looking for... with the exception that I have a two door vs three door compartment. How hard was it to build the box? Could I use MDF as I did in the rear? I used Fiberglass in the front but had a heck of a time and had to get help.
You can get a Woox cheaper than $230.00. I think I got mine off of E-bay for about $170.00 or so, and it was new. Here are a couple on there right now.
They appear to be from the same dealer but you can get an idea of what you can get them for.
As for replacing your other components, I can't help you. I am not a stereo hound like some of the folks on here. If I were you I would integrate the WooX into your exisiting rig and see what that does for you. Then I would start replacing your other components as you see fit from there. I am running 4X6s in the dash and some 3-way JVC 6X9s in the rear with a JVC CD AM/FM tuner of some kind that is probably rated 40 watts per channel. This stuff was put in by the previous owner and while not a powerhouse rig, it is plenty for the little cabin of my C-3. The Woox just gave it the punch it was missing which is exactly what I was looking for. CVT4ME Thanks, that helps a lot. I gonna get that wOOx and install it just to see how much it helps. My wife, an audiophile and talented singer says my current 15yo six speaker set-up sounds like a "cell phone". DOH! You've saved me money already, thanks.
