Default will paint stick to chrome?

I have just had my factory 69 side pipes covers re chromed, but they had black paint between the ribs. Is there a way to re paint between the ribs, and what type of paint is needed?
Thanks,

the simple answer is yes, you can paint over chrome, however it can be a little "complicated", first off you will have to sand, sand, and sand again to get the chrome as far down to "real metal" as you can. DO NOT make the mistake of using a really heavy grit paper to "make the job faster" because all you will end up doing is scarring the metal and it will look like crap when you are done.

Steps to take would be as follows

1) tape off all areas that you do not want to scratch

2) tape over the tape in step one because you WILL accidently sand through at least one spot

3) Use no less then 800 grit to start, Working you way to 1000 grit

4) When you are done sanding clean the areas THOROUGHLY with air (you can use water but be SURE to get the areas completely dry)

5) clean the areas with a tack rag with some grease remover on the rag (remember to keep the tape on the pipes some solvents will ruin chrome!)

6) Prime, and paint

If I missed anything someone will let me know I am sure

The airport I use to work at had a maintnance shop that used Zinc-Cromate to paint things such as aluminum and chrome with first them use paint over that. The Zinc-Cromate sticks to anything and then the paint sticks to that. Might want to check with your airport maintnace shop to see if they have any you could purchase and if it will work for what you are wanting to do. One thing though... Do not inhale this stuff at all, it is very toxic.

Good luck

I'd go to the local sign shop or auro parts stor and use pin stripping or heat resistant vinyl like is used to make vinyl sign material.

...if you don't need perfect originality I'd use the striping
...and I sell paint!
