Default Balancing the PS

This might be the dumbest question ever...but..

When balancing my power steering control valve ...should the car be running?

Not a bumb question.... Yes the engine should be running. The actuator should be dis-connected at the frame. Be careful... It's easy to get hurt working with hydraulics.

It can be tricky so be careful. The instructions say to disconnect the cylinder. Yes the engine should be running. make sure nothing is in the way because just a little turn can realy make the wheels turn fast.

I'm kind of unsure about the cylinder/actuator you say I should disconnect. I have some instructions a previous owner gave to me, and it said "disconnect the piston rod from the frame bracket"

Is that the same thing? There is a carter pin going through a bolt holding that on...Is that all I need to undo?

That's it.... disconnect it from the frame bracket so it won't move the wheels when you are working with it.

Ok I got that undone. I tried adjusting with the nut..are the wheels supposed to move depending on how you move the nut? because they didn't move for me...

The following paper and the two scans (Pic1 and Pic2) should answer all your questions on balancing the control valve.

Good luck,

With the engine running, cylinder disconnect, and trying to balance the valve...the wheels dont seem to move.

The wheels always go to the left. So that means I have to make them go more right to balance it. So that means I loosen the nut?

If you disconnected the assist cylinder rod from the frame, your front wheels won't turn when you adjust the control valve nut.

You are trying to get the assist cylinder rod to not extend or retract with the engine running. Now when you reattach the rod to the frame the valve should be balanced.

If my published instructions are not clear or complete enough, I will be happy to try and clarify them. But I have to know specifically where you have problems.

Why would your wheels move when the cylinder is disconnected?
