The bearing is going out in my A/C pump. Took off belt to be able to drive car. Can get a kit from auto store to convert to 134, oil, gas, etc.
What else is involved besides evacuating system,ie; anything else
need to be changed after I install a new pump? Steve
Usually if you replace the compressor due to a failure, you need to replace the reciever/drier and the evaporator core, as junk from the crapped out compressor will contaminate these parts also. The new compressor and others will handle R134a just fine, just get one of those $35.00 kits from AutoZone and have your system evacuated, put on the new parts and re-charge. You may want to replace the main hose "while you're at it"

If the compressor pulley bearing is the only thing going bad, you don't need to discharge the system to replace it. If removal of the belt stopped the noise, the pulley bearring is likely all that is wrong. The pulley, bearing and clutch plate are all available separately. They do take a couple special tools to do the replacement, but any mechanic had those tools in the 70s and 80s, and likely still will.
If you do convert over to R-134a, definitely replace the desicant (drier) while the system is discharged. But conversion isn't necessary to fix a bad pulley bearing.
