Guys..am toying with the idea of converting my 81 from stock exhaust to side pipes...what all will this entail...car is bone stock with no mods to carb, intake, computer..etc. Any info would be greatly appreciated!!
Do you have emission testing in your area?? If NOT, then the side pipe conversion, Hooker OR factory, is a piece of cake. You just have a BUNCH of parts to take off & bolt on. If you DO have emission testing, FORGET IT! Almost impossiable to hook up cat. converter to side exhaust
if you plan on keeping your 81 all stock dont blow all that money on hooker's!!...ya there real nice but way to $$$$...
my 79 is all stock and i went with jc whitney pipes only $204!
and got a hp gane out of them! http://www.photohost.org/gallery/dat...k04063-med.jpg
and i like'm a lot!
Hooker - you have to be careful EVERY time you get out of your car. You have to remember to remind the riders in your car when they are getting out of the car...why because if they lay their leg against the shiny pipe, it will be dull from the burning of their flesh. They do look cool though! The pipes that is....
OEM - I have them on mine. They are expensive, but so are the Hooker's.
Both sets are loud, especially loud when traveling about 60 mph or faster. After a long trip, ringing ears is going to be the norm. I love them though.
I'm going with black hookers. Should be here in a week or two! I am thinking of doing a chrome heat shield over the top though- black N chrome is sweet.
I even painted my rally wheels black to look better with the chrome rings and center caps.

Please post pics when installed as I am considering the same thing.
Had OEM sidepipes on my '69 350/350 4 speed and loved them! I put the same style on my '75 350 automatic and it has a whole different sound; kinda like an old car with a bad exhaust. I would think long and hard about putting them on an automatic tranny car.
Why not put factory side pipes on an automatic? I have them on my '71 with 350 and automatic, and it runs fine and looks good. They have been on there for years with no problems.
