Default ZZ4 and Tach question

Well one of my bosses had someone drop in a new zz4 in his 69 vette and he is wondering if there are any work-arounds as to how to get his old tach to work now... Any ideas /suggestions.? This is a new one to me so I told him I'd ask the experts on the forum. Thanks!

Use the old dist as long it is in good shape, will need a new dist gear and cap. The cam gear off the new dist might fit right on the old one.

He has essentially 3 choices for a tach with a ZZ4 in an older car. He can do as Fevre suggested and use the old tach and replace the gear with the one from the HEI that comes with the ZZ4. The reason to replace the gear is because the roller cam in the ZZ4 requires a different gear than a regular cam.

He could use the HEI that comes with the ZZ4 and convert his existing tach to an electronic one. I believe some people on this forum have done this and would have more knowledge of it.

Finally, He could opt to go with an MSD set up which is pricey. This would require a MSD tach drive distributor that will work with his existing tach, and a MSD box to drive the distributor something in the MSD 6 series would work well. Even with the MSD set up he will have to change distributor gears since they are set up for flat tappet cams instead of roller. This is the route I personally chose and it cost me close to 600 dollars since I went with the MSD digital 6 box. With an MSD 6 or 6al box it would cost around 450.

As already mentioned you can use the old dist.
I sent my old dist to Lars and he completely rebuilt it and modified the advance curve. It works great.

You can get a tach-drive HEI and use the ZZ4 gear. You can use a 75-77 electronic tach, but the faces don't match. You can have your stock tach converted to electronic-see Clocks by Roger. Mallory used to make a Unilite tach-drive distributor that would work.
