Default Sidepipe Mufflers

I love my sidepipes, and I love the sound, but my neighbor is getting crabbier all the time. Big block, headers, side pipes...whacha gonna do, it's gonna be loud

Are there particular fairly non-restrictive mufflers I could consider for the sidepipes that might quiet things a bit? I'm not convinced that I'm even willing to do it, but I'm considering...

I wouldn't change a thing and eventually you'll get a new neighbor. Happen to me and the new guy that moved in had a 75 vette and 73 z/28 big block and loves the sound of side pipes. Plus, I've always got a great extra pair of hands I can call on at a moments notice.

If you're running the Hooker sidepipes, consider the JCL spiralbaffle inserts. About the best compromise on power and noise. Charles

I sure would not change the exhaust on my Vette cause the neighbor thoughtit was too loud. I will not add a muffler to my straight piped diesel truck cause the neighbor thinks it's too loud. Same goes for the Harley, Loud pipes save lives.

I used to use these inserts (homegrown recepie with influences of JCL )But i thought they sounded hard and had no rumble to them. The perforated plates at the back were used during inspection and were filled with steelwool to dampen the sound

So i designed these inserts that gave a nice sweet rumble at idle and a roar at WOT.The idea of these came from the motorcycleracing scene. I really like these inserts

First off , F your neighbor. If it's not after 10pm or something and they are complaining, then they're a butthole, and not worth trying to please. I have a neighbor that's the same way, I just ignore him.

The JCL baffles are awesome and well worth the money.

I agree with the others...too bad your neighbor is complaining, but even though I have the JCL's (and mine are uncapped at that...there is a difference), I still do not drive my car late, late at night.

I had open pipes for about a month and had to go with the JCL's. On my 530+hp BB, I could not tell any difference in performance. I didn't dyno them, so I have no data except my butt-meter, which is pretty sensitive from years of 1/4 mile racing.

But the open pipes are probably NOT legal, unless you live in a very rural area. I had to do something b/c I was honestly embarrassed to drive with it like that after awhile. Just pulling away gently from a stoplight sounded like I was trying to burn rubber. Every time I'd see a cop (I live in a N. Dallas, TX suburb, so its heavily populated which means lots of patrol) I'd have to clutch it. I was definitely afraid of getting a ticket for a noise violation.

If you don't mind spending the $$ on the JCL inserts, you'll be very happy. Trust me, they are still very loud at WOT, and that's where you want it loud. But cruising around it definitely quieted the car down, although no one will mistake you for a Honda or a Mustang or F-body with Flowmasters.

You may want to try coating your headers. I understand that ceramic coated headers not only reduces the amount of heat in the engine compartment (and floorboards), but also quiets it down a lot. But, that starts to get expensive. You might also want to try some chambered pipes rather than the free flow.

How about a pair of ear plugs?

Brown, I don't think you had the JCL baffles as you have to get them from him. I vote for the JCL's as well. I am running them and dynoed them and I love the sound of mine uncapped and is the best sidepipe option available when horsepower matters. That is of course assumes you want to run a muffler.
