I am not sure how common it is, but on my side pipes, on the outside of the car where the pipes come together I have been getting quite a bit of rust on them...
any tricks for getting the rust off? very fine steel wool has worked well for the easy stuff, but the more stubborn stuff is not going anywhere.
A rusty one would be a little squeaky.
All you can do is get rid of the rust however you have to. I've even heard of people using Coka Cola, but I don't know how true that is.
I'm having the same problem with mine.... Anyone have any suggestions on what would be the best way to have them refinished? Chrome, powdercoating etc... I've even heard of something called Chromax thats suppose to never rust etc... ...
I have Cromax coated headers from S&P, but they are still new, so I couldn't tell you how well they last. Sorry. But I do hear that they work quite well.
jet hot coatings arn't as durable as they claim they are,, my ram horns looked great till i took the car on a road trip and then the luster was gone,, they claim they got too hot,,,well they brag about how they are this high tech coating, and its just not true,, and the best you'll get outta them is 1/2 off to re coat the item(thats just gonna do the same thing again) so why bother
I dunno. I'm hoping that it's the ceramic coating that I've heard helps keep the heat down under the hood, but I actually just bought 'em cause they were the only ones I could find that would fit my application. They look almost like polished aluminum. Sort of.
My experience is its not very easy to get it "all" off! Get what you can with the various suggestions above and try using wet/dry sandpaper with a popsicle stick or similar, being very carefull not to touch the good chrome. I then use a little Dupli-Color High Heat Aluminum spray paint to touch up the seams between the pipes. Then wipe off any overspray on the good chrome with laquer thinner. Its not perfect but looks alot better than before. You have to get fairly close and be looking for something to notice the fix. The ones on the 69 have been on since the late 70's. Wish they cost what I paid back then, I'd buy another set.
