I have a 308 rear gear and want a 370 to pep the car up a bit. I called a few Chevy dealers and it seems they don't have anyone who wants to tackel the job.
I called a Olds dealer and he said he'd do it but the gears, shims and seals would cost over $600 from them. He told me a local auto parts dealer could get me everything I needed for about $400. He said if I got the parts he'd do it for $250.
That sounds pretty good to me but just wanted to check in here to see if you guys have any opinions on the gears as far as the best brand. Also is there anything else I may need? I'm also thinking about putting a new composit rear spring on at the time along with a new rear hsgn since mine has one of the ears broken off.
Prices for rebuilding vette differentials vary from place to place and also what is done to them. Most vette shops charge about $500 to replace the bearings, seals, and standard posi rebuild. Add about $250-$300 for new gears,$80 for HD rear cover, $70 each for side yokes. You're up to about $900 not including the labor to remove and install.
Material cost for comparision when I rebuild a differential runs
$100 for kit,
$130 yokes
$60-80 HD cover
$80 posi clutches
$25 posi shim kit
$225 new gears- US made
$25 for additive and oil
$250 for labor isn't a bad deal providing he does the job right.
