I haven't posted in a while, but it is good to get back to the forum. Let the addiction begin again. Rehab is for quitters and all. I am getting ready to strip the 69 vert. It was originally Daytona Yellow. I haven't decided what color to go with yet. However, I must first get the old paint off.

I have started with the razor blade. That worked pretty good in areas, but I have got some pretty large problem areas. I have heard about Uncle Lee's (or something like that). Does anyone have any horror stories about that particular product? Please just limit it to Uncle Lee's, or other products made specifically to fiberglass. I have heard all of the stories about the remover continuing to eat right through to china, and kill innocent people. That is what they get for using aircraft stripper (guess I better not use the word stripper with the new rules about babes (things have changed a little since I was last here).

Otherwise, I am thinking of taking 80 grit to it. I am taking vacation, and I only have approximately 40 hours to work on getting the old off. Does anyone else have any suggestions.

 

The stripper is called Captain Lees Stripper.
There are lots of pros and cons to using chemicals. I won't try and detail all the horror or sucess stories I've read here.
The success full stories seem to entail ruthless cleaning of the surfaces after use.

 

Lee's is good, I used Bix that comes in a black/white gallon can. It's water soluble. when done, just wash with soap and water, rinse, dry, and move to the next panel.

 

I stripped my L88 hood with the Lee's stuff. It worked great and I was really impressed with it. I have had the hood on the car for a while and there was never any problems with bubbles or other things people claim from chemical strippers.

 

I have seen two or three different opinions on this stuff. What is the factory primer color on a '69. I believe mine is gray. I am about 1/2 way finished, and need a quick way to get to this primer. I was thinking of using it as a starting point to build back up. Does anyone see a problem with this.

 

Red Oxide is usually the factory primer, at least on the vettes I've seen.

 

Razor blades are better, cheaper and cleaner...

 

I bought some paint stripper from Lee's several years ago. He was at a swapmeet here in Dallas. When I got back to his booth, all he had left were cans which were labeled "wood stripper". I was reluctant to buy it but he assured me it was the same as the can's labeled "fiberglass stripper." I made the purchase, used the product, and indeed it did take the paint off.

I finally decided to have the body media blasted to remove the rest of the paint, as I felt uncomfortable about using this stripper. The paint residue from his stripper has soaked into the fiberglass and did not come off even though I washed it with acetone and with media blasting.

I have yet to paint the car to see if the paint will bubble.

 

I used 2 containers of Lees on my 65 and took it down to the bare glass. Its been about 8 years now and never had a problem. I would use it again if I had to.
