I am just about done with all the fiberglass repair on the underside of my '69.
My plan was to do the same thing on this car as I did on my '67. On the '67, I sanded the engine compartment and underside thoroughly, primed it, sanded it again, and then shot it with a semi-flat black lacquer similar to Krylon. This is great for the engine compartment but I have been thinking I might want something a little more durable for the underside.
I was just wondering if anyone out there has any great ideas on some kind of coating for this application. I definitely don't want to use any of the normal undercoating products that are soft and "tar" like.
I used Ace Industrial Aluminum Paint. It's an exterior enamel that is used to paint Aluminum and steel tanks. It comes in a quart can for about $9. I masked what I wanted to paint, then used pieces of sponge to dab the paint on. I'm hoping that because it's not sprayed on that it will be easier to touch up and I will get the reflective benefits of the metalic surface.
Here are a couple of pics (sorry about the size):
Good luck with your painting.

Reason: I kant spel so good
Steve, on my 69 I used PPG epoxy black primer. It adheres well to fiberglass and metal and comes in two 1 qt cans. Mix a little extra hardner for a higher gloss finish. It costs about $35 for two one qt cans. It can be brushed on in quantities that you can apply in about 20 minutes. It has good flow characteristics, cleans up with lacquer thinner and I was very satisfied with the result.
GATOR454: Great pics! Thanks. Is that a VB&P system on the rear of the car?
Red 69: I have used the PPG epoxy black primer on my '69 Camaro but I never thought of brushing it on. I sprayed it on the Camaro and the overspray sticks to everything in the area. This is one of the reasons I was not leaning towards it. Brushing is an interesting alternative.
Yes, it is the VBP performance plus package. I have the front all the way in. I'm hoping it works as good as it looks. I'm rebuilding the trailing arms now, before finishing up the rear install.
i used black por-15 on the shell and the frame 12yrs ago and it's still stuck on there. looks great, easy to clean. brushed it on. check it out. http://www.cardomain.com/id/rlato
Steve, I checked out the POR 15 product and plan on using it on some future project. I can't find where it says for fiberglass, but others claim it sticks like glue. You might want to look into it. I am not sure it will provide the semi flat finish I like or if it can be topcoated like the PPG. In the engine bay, I topcoat the PPG in some places with Krylon semi flat black which provides an original look. http://www.por15.com/default.asp
I went to paint store. They recomended "Rubberised Undercoating and Sound deadener #348. It sprayed on and sticks well. I also used this to stop leaks in Windshield Wiper well. About $7.00 per can. I will use more in the future.

When I restored my 68 firebird, I used Monsey Protective Coatings #700 Gel Seal Canister Grade Undercoat. I got it from either Eastwoods or Year One, I forget. I also got the special spray gun with it. It went on real nice and hardens to a textured semi-gloss finish. Perfect for quieting the car down as well as looking good. You can pick it off with your fingernail, but it isn't soft like tar. Joe
por-15 can be used on the fiberglas atleast it says so. As soon as those bastids drop it on my door im crawling under there and putting it on, will keep you updated if you need it. If you cant tell im a little irritated on how long it has taked for it to get here..2 weeks out and counting..wonder if they are flying across seas to find the ingredients or what!!
I'm going with Line-X providing it doesn't add to much weight which I don't think it will. Anything more than 10 - 15 lbs and I don't want it. It'll cost me $400 but since I can't paint it'll cost me most of that to paint the car anyway. Plus I get the added benifit of some sound and heat reduction.
