Default best Exhaust solution for C3?

is there a consensus amongst those in the know of the best overall solution for a driver c3? the best fitting, sounding kits available.? I'm afraid to take it to the local "joe" at the muffler shop and have him bend a bunch of pipe if theres a better solution. (I been working on my '71 for a year and exhaust is all I lack!!! yee haaa!)

thanks again....
Tim

The best thing you can do: Modify or replace your cross member so so your true duals can come straight back from your headers.

I tore my whole exhaust system of many years ago when my car was still new. I bolted on my headman 1 5/8th's headers and drove down to the local muffler shop. They really did a nice job

Glass packs were kind of the thing back then so I went with 3 inch in and out with chrome tips basically in the same position as the stock mufflers. I had already removed my spare tire carier assembly for weight loss.

Now I have big stainless packed race mufflers and an "H" pipe on my three inch system.

My advice is go 3 inch the first time and that way your not going to have to improve it later. Nothing makes a rumble like big throaty pipes. they are kind of quiet until you step on the go petal!

That's exactly what I did. I severed the crossmember and moved the exhaust holes further outboard:

I've got 3" duals also, had the same size w/ old motor. I also have 3" duals on my truck with Dynomax race bullets (the shorter ones) and theya re not quiet, even at idle there's a real rumble. When you get on it the fun really starts. No H or X pipes in any of my systems. One thing I did was isntall vortex header cone inserts in my truck exhaust to remove the raspy sound at WOT, it worked like a champ. Noise levels didn't reduce but now it's a deep roaring sound all the time.

What muffler do you guys recommend. I have the Flowmaster 40 on my truck and i am real tired of the drone (resonance). What do you all think is the best sounding muffler?

I don't agree with running the exhuast through the crossmember, I modified mine so the exhaust cames straight back off the headers and under the crossmember, the pipe does not dip down in any way, it comes staight back. I can drop the whole exhaust easily without pulling pipes apart.
I run 3 inch, I need to but most can get away with 2 1/2. 3 inch is just naturally louder.
I run dynamax super turbo's. I hate noise and I hate resonance.
I also run a cross pipe right behind the transmission crossmember.

i use 304 stainless flex pipe for my entire exhaust system. Its extremely easy to install yourself and you can route it over the rear spring so the pipe doesn't constantly bottom out on bumps.

This is what I have to install on my '80 soon. It is a MAD true duals system with a pair of Dynomax Super Turbos. It should sound good but not real loud. No crossmember mods for this setup. No cat either
