Default what is this ??

Anybody have an idea what the significance of this little badge on the side of my engine block is. I'm thinking it is from a rebuilder or possibly indicates a replacement block?

Looks like a dime that indicates if your engine has overheated.

Is that molded on there? or is it stuck (glued) somehow?
If its glued, that may mean its rebuilt, they do that with heads to.
but if it's part of the mold from the block, I have no idea

It's definitely not part of the block mold. It looks like it's brass or some other material. Just stuck to the side of the block. Engine was supposedly rebuilt so I'm thinking that's what it indicates, but figured I'd check to see if anyone knows for sure.
Thanks

Yeah, they usually put those on the freeze plugs too. Just stuff from the rebuilder.

It is in fact a temperature indicator. If it turns black, no more warranty. If it's removed, no more warranty.

Interesting. Warranty is not an issue as I don't have any idea as to who or when the engine was rebuilt. How hot would the engine have to get to turn that thing black?

Okay, I just talked to my engine builder about those things. They don't actually turn black, there is a low temperature lead in them that will run out if they are exposed to temperature in excess of 250 degrees. Actually they melt at a range from 240-260 degrees. Detroit Diesel used to put them on their new engines as long as 12 years ago, but now they don't have to anymore because the computer will remember and record high temp conditions.

That is the mark that a rebuilder puts on a block. Your engine has been rebuilt at least once before. When I had the 327 rebuilt in my 66, the engine shop, which is owned by a friend, was instructed not to put that on the engine.
