Sorry to sound stupid, but;
are you folks talking about doing all the work yourself or just reinstalling rebuilt ones from a vendor?

Mine needs rear bearings and I was going to remove them send them for rebuild and put them back on.
How much work is that?

I'm pretty good with a wrench, but; I don't have a lot of spare time.
I am definitely not going to press the bearings, etc. myself.

We're discussing the process involved in actually doing the dis-assembly, fitting, re-assembly... wether it be the owner or a shop.

Edit- removal and re-installation of the arms is not always "easy" per se, but most mechanically inclined guys can handle it.

Cars from the snow(salt) belt are the most difficult because of the rust involved.

Removing and re-installing the through bolt at the front of the arms is usually the most difficult part.

To remove the factory struts (lower shock support) you need another special tool (or method) to avoid breaking the ears off the spindle support.

I am kind of in the same boat. I do not know of any garages that work on Vette's. The only place that comes to mind is the Chevy garage. I wonder it they have the tools and the knowledge to do it. The job does not seem overly technical but does require the patience to get the right clearance. Before I would pay $300, I just get replacements already done and sell the old ones. The problem as I see it is that I don't want to spend the money for tools that I may never use again, but I may have to bite the bullet and buy them; and then rent them out to other members.

Default ahh

think i got it...... i figured a way to measure for the size shim i needed..... i have the outer bearing on the spindle pressed in and both race ways in the support.... i then put the spindle,spacer and a shim in the support and measured from the top of the shim to the bottom of the race for the inner....... i had about 1/16th of an inch of clearance left with the shim in...... i figure once it all get tightened down, that number will shrink some...... i used the bigger sized shims so hopefully it'll all work out................. one last thing, what kind of grease should i use for the bearings and how much should i fill it up with?

I didn't use any new shims. I must of been lucky too. I did mine several years ago & haven't had any problems. I used a spindle knocker with a mini sledge to knock it out.
