I bought a retro R-134 kit from Ecklers, and I am having trouble with one of the parts. I do not know where the Orifice, Ac Evaporator piece goes. I called Ecklers, but I have not heard back from them yet, so I thought I would get some advice here if I could. Below is a link to what the item looks like. I just can not figure out where this piece would go. Does it go in the compressor? If so, then which opening would I use? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The orfice tube goes in the small line on the Evaporator. Take the small hardline off and it is in there. Use a hemostat(sp?) or small needle nose pliers to get it out. Try not to break it.
Assuming your old system was working. You just wasted a lot of $$$ and created work for yourself. There are a ton of direct drop in compatiable gases for the R12 systems. There was no need for the so-called retro kit. Envor-Gard is 1 there are many others.

Don't be fooled by those quote drop in gases for R-12 yes they will work. If however you ever need professional service and cannot do it yourself a good shop will not work on your car as you gas will contaminate their equipment the switch over is the proper way to install 134 in an R-12 system. Sure it is a pain and expensive to do it right but once it is done then your only having to perform routine service that can be done anywhere there is a good airconditioning service garage.

I Completely disagree with the above statement. The drop in stuff is much safer then the R134. A good shop would have vacuumed all the old gas out and then add 4 oz of new oil and a recharge. Some shops also install an in-line filter and that is it. The same shops are also converting old R134 systems with the new gases. I have used the new stuff in one of my 73 vettes and in one of my kids 1995 Grand Prix the stuff worked as good if not better then the old R12 and R134.

Rolm, you are right. The stuff does work very well. The problem is it's not DOT approved because it contains propane. My own opinion: use it, just don't tell the DOT or the EPA.
