I'm no expert, but that looks more like a VIN issued by the state and not from GM -- DMV(department of motor vehicles)XXXXXCA(california). Anyway I think the '69's had the standard VINS something along these lines 194379S700001 through 194379S738762 the fourth digit is a 6 for convertables. http://www.idavette.net/facts/69.htm

It's a State of California assigned VIN. DMV (Dept Motor Vehicles), their assigned number, and CA for California.
I had a 1967 Austin Mini Cooper S a few years ago. Came from California. Had a State DMV number... DMV24182CA Chuck

It's a replacement, meaning
1. that the car was stolen/recovered and the VIN tag was stolen, thus a state issued VIN was given.
2. Might also mean that the VIN tag rusted off the windshield frame and became illegible, and that the state issued a VIN.
In any case, the car is now titled by the state DMV VIN number. The original 69 VIN is long gone. It should be something like 194679S7XXXXX, where the X's are the sequential build numbers, 00001 to 30XXX or so. You might find the VIN derivitive stamped on the top of the drivers side rear frame rail. You might find the VIN derivitive stamped on the motor, if it's the original engine.
NOT a good thing. It affects the value of the car. Chuck

I also have a mix and match 1970. The vin is 94370S40xxxx but the pad on the motor is T0104 CLB with a serial # 1B1135498. I know the motor is a 71 402 (396) and I think it came from a 71 Chevelle. What I do not know what motor it had at birth. I'm not losing any sleep because this thing is a screamer and scary all at the same time. Any help on the originial equipment would be nice. Thanks!

Your 1970 VIN should be in the format: 194370S400001 through 417316. For convertibles, the fourth digit is a 6 194670SXXXX.
I think the VIN you posted is missing a digit or two. Chuck

CLB = '71-'72 402 CID big block
T0104 = Tonawanda (New York) January 4th
Definitely not Corvette, but a big block just the same. This is not fool proof, but it's easy to check. Does your car have a rear stablizer bar? Big Block Corvettes came with rear stabilizers. If your car has one, it's an indication (indication only) that the car may have been an original big block. Likewise, if your car has no rear stablizer, it's a possible clue the car was originally a small block and the rat motor was swapped in at a later date.

Easy Mike,
Thanks for the info Ill check out the stabilizer bar tonight. How about the tach. My understanding that all 70 motors, mouse and rat have 5300 redlines except for the LT1 which had a 5600 redline. Any truth to the statement? I have a 5600 redline tach that "appears" to be original.
Thanks again,
