I don't think I have any rust problems in the winshield post area but would like to confirm. What's involved to get down to the post. First glance looks like removal of the weatherstrip and trim piece. Close?
That's the way I did it...the top exterior piece as well..
while you're at it, push out on your windshield in a few places, I found that mine was no longer sealed and that most of the leaks I thought were the T tops were actually the windshield..
Remove the kick panels and look down at the body mounts. Rust laying on top would come from above (windshield frame). Many rust out at the bottom edge under the dash cap, kind of hard to see, but evidence of water leaking behind the gauges is a good reason to look further.
Sorry to say... that will not be enough. I am working on the body now from my body off resto (FEB 02) and I found the lower corner ROTTED. The ONLY way to be 100% is to .... .... CUT THE TOPS OF THE FENDERS and look at the corners. The "birdcage" can and will rot BELOW the base of the windshield. I thought everything was clean until I read this in a resto book. Sure enough, passenger side "triangle" was wiped out. I fab'd a new piece from some sheet metal and mig'd it in place. Just something to be mindful of happening...
Yes, and after repairs to preclude that happening again....I dump a ton of black RTV down that fender area, totally back filling and sealing forever against water.....right up to the top of the fender against the glass/trim/whatever....
