Default Ignition Boxes

Can anyone explain the benfit of installing an MDS or Accel ignition module before my HEI. I don't quite understand the benefit of do this but see a lot of cars with it. Does it really help? How does it work? Can one be installed with my Flame Thrower HEI?

I doubt you would see any benefit as the HEI is tough to beat once you go through it. The module and coil are not great for high RPM but that can be fixed. The extra box might give a slightly better idle and a little faster startup.

I run a Crane CD multispark box on one of my other old cars that used to have points. It is nice that it has a built in adjustable rev limiter but I think I would run a small body HEI next time without a box. I do not think I will ever need more than that.

I see you're in Frisco... I'm in Plano and if you do want a CD box I have an Accell 300 I'm not using. 1/2 price of whatever summit wants.

What model number is it? I am interested...

Also, have you found any good cars shows to attend in the area or clubs to get involved with?

It's 49300:

They want $184, so half that = $92.

The Chucks car show in Frisco is a nice low key show. Think it's every 3rd saturday of the month.

The stock GM HEI is 2nd to none. The ignition is so great that most people don't know that it is fully automatic in it's operation. When the plugs and wires are new it outputs 15,000 volts to fire the plugs and as the wires and plugs get weaker the output can increase upto 50,000 volts. This why plugs and wires will last upto 100,000 on a clean running engine. The aftermarket junk may work a bit better if your engine is red-lined in the 6500rpm range. Bottom line stick with the GM HEI
