Default Small Journal 350?

My neighbor recently boiught a '63 convertible with a 350 engine. Abviously the engine is not stock but he said it was out of a 68 camaro and its a small journal 350. I've never heard of that before nor can I find any info on it either. Has anyone heard of a production 350 small journal engine?

Yes there was a 68 350, it was 68 Camaro only. I've never seen one, but that is what I have been told. Block would be a 3858618. It is a large journal type.

Actually the 350 came out in the 67 Camaro. The 68 and later blocks went to the larger journal so the 67 350s should be a small journal. This is going from memory but I had Camaros for years and did a lot of research on them. I can check it out when I get to some of my manuals.

Just checked some books. All the SB motors from 68 and later went to the large journals. All 67 302 327 and 350 motors were the small journals.

If I'm not mistaking 68+ is all 2,45 journal, so it has to be a 67 when the 350 was first introduced, probably still had the 2,3 journal then. In 68 when it became mainstream they all had 2,45 journals.

Makes sense to me but I've never seen any documentation on a small journal 350 (67 or 68).

No such animal ever made. 265/283/302/307/327 older than 68 were small journal. GM realized that the small journal had weakness problems in the high hp 302/327's and that why they increased the diameter with the introduction of the 350. All later 302/327/350's were of the larger dia.

Can't say I have ever seen one but the Camaro manual I have states that the 67 350 has small journals. All the specs given for the 67 motors is small journal. The 68 and later blocks were all upgraded to the "new" improved blocks therefore got the bigger journals.

Just found a piece in How To Hot ROD SB Chevys that states "When the 302 and 350 inch engines were introduced in 67 (with the large diameter crank) the rod bolts stayed at 11/32. Everything from 68 and later used the 3/8 diameter bolts. So that says the 302 and 350 were all large diameter cranks. That makes more sense so the manuals must be wrong.

I recall the '67 302 being a small journal. I have always heard that '67 and earlier were small journal and '68 and later were large journal.

The 67 Camaro SS 350 was the first use of the bigger journal. The 67 327 and 302 etc were still small journal. The 350 had a longer stroke and a small journal 350 would not have enough overlap in the main/rod journal area of the crank. GM increased the journal diameter for the 67 Camaro 350 crank which improved strength and relaibillity. All 350's are the bigger journal.

Only the 327's came in small and big journal sizes. Search for replacemt crankshafts - you'll never find a small journal 350 crank. Joe
