Default Tachometer not working

I have a 74 with the low performance 350. The tach has been operating on and off for a while. Sometimes it works fine but most of the time it works for a while then stops working. Only 37,000 miles

Any ideas. Is there an easy way to get to the back of the Tach other than taking apart the dash from the front, or does the whole dash have to come out?

Thanks for anyones help

Search the archives. Sounds like it may be the tach filter acting up.

If it's the original tach it should be driven by the distributor. check the cable and/or the cross gears inside the distributor.

As far as reaching the back, you can unbolt and lower the steering column, remove the screws holding the left side of the dash and tilt the gauge cluster down. Joe

Rob,if it is the original tach drive it probably just needs a new inner cable....if that is all it is it is much much easier to just undo the dist end and pull the old inner out and feed in the new lubed inner from that end...the dash removal can be a real pain otherwise.....john
