Default Rear Bumper alignment... please help!

Okay... paint job got bumped up by three weeks. I dropped the body on the frame just to make sure I am not fiddling with a freshly painted body. I figured I would set up the rear bumpers as the last owner BARELY had them on. I fixed the fiberglass in the rear and I thought it was just too easy.

I CANNOT get the rear bumpers to fit correctly. If I make the outside (actually side) of the bumper flush to the mounting point, the rear is sticking out. If I flush the rear, the side sticks out? I don't get it. To make matters worse, I snugged up the side and then tightened the rear, BAM..... the side fiberglass cracked near the mounting hole. WHAT GIVES... besides the damn fiberglass. Has anyone had trouble aligning rear bumpers.

All the photos in my books show the bumpers PERFECT. Also, the bumpers do not appear to be bent anywhere. I am really stuck on this one!

The pics in the books probably have shims in to make the bumpers fit like you see them. That being said, mine has no shims in it. But mine was cracked like you said yours were when I got it.

Hi Eddie-
Thanks for the quick reply... I am sitting here stewing over this... :mad

Not sure about the shims. The photos I have seen, the bumper is real snug to the body. Something is out of whack. Why must everything on these beloved hotrods test out patience? The rear braces match up, but the side sticks out further than the body mounting point...

ed. It almost seems as if the bumper needs made into a smaller angle.

ahhh... the fiberglass that I repaired on the sides was TOO thick. This made the mounting point stick waaaaay out. The body shop called me to let me know this AND.... they are putting the guide coat on right now... I am going by tomorrow to check it out.
