I looked around on the web under "car radio" I think and found a place that sold rebuild car radio's. So I got the right one for my 74 vert. You can find almost anything on the web...
I think it will be okay to post these 2 repair guys as there are no supporting vendors that do this. Mods, please feel free to scold me if I'm out of line with this thinking.
This one did a great job repairing mine, not a total rebuild, just repaired what was needed: Gordon Ward glw@mchsi.com or phone 256-852-0955 (Huntsville, AL.)
Be sure to run 8 ohm speakers with these older radios. Modern speakers will blow the output circuits. Many of the supporting vendors have Delco "upgrade" speakers which are 2-way, sound a lot better then the originals and mount in the dash the same.
Does anyone know what the make/model number was for a am/fm stereo raido for a 74. I want to replace the POS I have for a original model.
The 74 AM/FM stereo radio has model #41YFM1, the 73, 75, and 76 are also identical and carry #'s 31YFM1,51YFM1 and 61YFM1. This number is found on a small label on the side of the radio. Be also aware these radios have an external amplifier(convector) and heatsink assembly that mounts on the windshield frame behind the dash. You must have both pieces or the radio will not work. It is a 5" x 7" finned aluminum piece with two DS-501 output transistors. The radio has a 6 wire cable, about 30" length) that plugs into the amp. A pita to repair if cut or damaged. The radios sound best with original 10 ohm factory type speakers. Speakers with less than 8-10 ohms can damage the output transistors. Hope this helps.
it has a service model # 21VFP1
a serial # that wont matter
and a product # 7937571
A radio like this would fit your car . you can put up to & including a model year 1976 in your car. "77 wont fit, even tho on Ebay I see them all the time that say they will.
A stock radio is going to suck nearly as bad as a Custom Auto sound. Maybe you could get a cheap core radio (that could be upgraded to modern technology)and send it to the rebuilder that is advertising in the parts section. I just sold a 77 radio for $25, there are cheap cores around if you look.
Also plenty of Radios for your car on Ebay.
I dont have an exact part # for 1974 radio but this will keep you near the top.
I have a 72 AM/FM stereo radio if interested. It has the 21VFM1 stereo radio and the 21VMPA1 stereo multiplex assembly. This is a 72 only factory assembly. Please email if interested.
