4 1/2" backspace on 17X9 rim too much?
Just wondering if anyone has done this size wheel before?
Will it fit in the rear? What about 17X8 w/ 4 1/2" BS in the front?
This is for a '79- no offset trailing arms, but am prepared to move the E-brake cable bracket if I have to. I think with this size wheel it will be inside so it will depend on the wheel inside (but I could be wrong).
Thanks!

It depends on your front tire diameter. Right now I have 17X9 front 4.5 bs and I think right that they are 255/50/17 about 27 inch dia and you can't go full lock in either direction Because it polishes up the sway bar in fron and light touch on the back wheel well frame.
It's not a big deal i just learned to not crank it all the way over.
On the rear 4.5 is perfect I used that BS for 15+ years.

I will probably be going with some pretty low profile rubber-band style tires. Probably 255/45 17's or something along that nature. I guess I will have to order a rim or two and some tires to see if they will fit.
So the 17X9 will fit up front? Not worried about full lock rubbing- I don't think that will be much of a problem.
I may even go with 18" wheels & tires.
Thanks!

My best advice is to decide what kind of tires you intend to by and then find the wheels.
If I had it to do over again I would have bought 18 inch wheels. The tires really don't cost that much more. My last two rears were about $600 mounted and balanced. I want 18X12 rears and 9-10's on the front..
I'm using the VB&P's 2 inch wheel adapters on my 17X11 rears with 6.5 bs

I just did the same thing, everyone I talked to said stay with 17x8 and put 255/45-17 all the way around, so thats what I did on Boyds Smootie II's . I am not 100% sure but I think the best price is from Axis Performance http://actiongrafix.net/axishp.html

I already know what tires I want (not much choice as I get tires at 5% over cost, but I have to get what they carry).
They will be Falken GRB FK-451's or something like that... They have them in 255/45 17
Not sure if the 255/40 17 would look right.
Got my last set of Falken Ziex for $242 for all four including 4 wheel alignment/mounting/balancing...

Well the FK-451 is a Z rated performance tire with an AA traction rating... The Ziex 502 that I have now is an H rated, but in the sizes I'm looking at are Z rated as well.
Not a dry weather only tire, but as this is not only my auto-X car but a sunny weather Daily Driver I think it best to go with one of these.
My choices are pretty limited:
