Default Timing Question, Dialing in.

I have a 1969 350/300 engine and I just replaced the original parts with the following:
Edelbrock - RPM Heads, Intake, 600 cfm RPM Carb
Crane Cams - XR-1 electronic ignition, Cam and lifters(113902). Cam specs (http://www.cranecams.com/index.php?s...02&lvl=2&prt=5)
New Timing Chain and pushrods
Plugs - R45S
Headers

So, I am trying to set my timing. I set it at 8 (factory specs), then 4. Did not have much power and vacuum was only about 10, at these settings. Also would not start when hot.

Next, I tried setting the timing when the vacuum was reading the highest. It read 15. I checked the timing and it was at about 15. I thought "yikes", but went for a test ride anyways. Wow, lots of power and seemed to run really good. Hot start seemed to not be a problem. So, with these weird setting is this just telling me that I have another problem elsewhere or with my mods, do you think that these setting are okay?

Thanks in advance -

Only works with non-HEI, with my upgrade I think that I am considered HEI. Right?

Unless you changed to an HEI distributor, you do not have an HEI and Lar's instructions would apply. Just set it at 36º total and don't worry about the initial unless it winds up being too low again.

Okay Guys, I did the LARS procedure and it put me back to 10 degrees advanced. I will have to give it a test run tomorrow. Thanks for the advice.
