Does anyone have the MSD setup in an early C3? If so, what are your thoughts on it...how hard was it to install, etc.? I think I might want to get rid of my points and I've heard quite a bit of positive reviews of the MSD.
Do you mean the 6A or 6AL, or the distributor or both together? I have the 6A and using a Pertronics under the cap. The 6A box did make a difference with starts and general driving.
Running the MSD 6AL box, billet distributor, coil and wires. Main reason I went with the 6AL as well as others, was the rev limiter feature. Been happy with it for 4+ years now.
I have the Crane HI6 box on mine. Very similar to the MSD box but no pills for the rev limiter. Just 2 rotary dials for the rev limiter. Been very happy with it. I am using the stock dist and a MSD coil and the Crane box. It performs well to 7000+ rpm. Starts better and idles better with this setup.
I have had no real problems with my MSD. When installed it was wired to something that wasnt getting a full 12volt so the engine ran poorly and eventually stalled at a stop. Since that was corrected it ran fine. I can not comment on teh drivability vs the points though, since I installed it after the engine rebuild. I have read that the revlimiter isnt so good on the msds though. Can sometimes be a few hundred rpm off. Mine is dead set at 6k rpm though, which is where it is supposed to be. The msd tach drive distributor has a grease fitting so the cross drive can be lubed, that is pretty cool. I know that when i went from points to a factory electronic sparkbox on my 69 mustang with a 302 that I instantly got 2mpg better gas mileage.
MSD 6AL with Petronix II, very happy with the results after 3 years. I was told by MSD that the plug gap should be btn .45 & .55 instead of the stock @ .35 although I didn't change the gap I will try it on my next tuneup.
