I had to replace the shifter console plate so while I had it off I deleted the ash tray/lighter option and made some storage space for my cell phone , sunglasses or what ever. I cut out the mounts for the ash tray and lighter and mounted a little box I made out of plexiglass and covered with vinyl. I also stripped the door and polished it.

 

Cool......but you should have made it into a cup holder

 

That was my first thought but there wasn't enough room to do it.

I really like this idea. The box looks great as well. Did you need to strip the cover though? It looks great but I would hve prefered the original (black?) color.

 

Do they still put ash trays in new cars?

 

Never have been a smoker so the ash tray and lighter were useless to me. The cover was pitted and needed repainted and while I was cleaning it up and sanding the paint off one thing led to another and I ended up polishing it. I wasn't sure if I was going to like it like that or not but once I had had it mounted in the car I liked it.It sort of accents the console and the chrome power window switches.

 

It looks pretty bad. I'd either go back to stock or at least paint the door black.

 

I have my tray door stripped and polished too. I think it looks good.
