Default c3 vibration promlem

Ok guys, Need a little help. I have a 68 with a vibration problem. It happens at all speeds above 35 mph. Its coming from the rear. It also goes away when you let of the gas. I know u- joints. I replaced both drive shaft u-joints and put two new heavy duty 3 inch axles in from ecklers. I aslo pulled the rear and rebuilt that.I know my camber adjustment rods need to be replaced( worn bushings). I did notice the axles from ecklers have no weights on them. Balance axles? Is there anything else that could cause this problem? oh bearings are good.

Thanks for any advice,

C3NUT

Tires? Either have them checked or jack up the rear and have someone else give her some gas and shift into neutral while you watch.

Try swapping the halfshafts backwards.

Bet it is your pinion snubber bushing, those symtoms are identical to when the nut came off mine and the bushing went bye bye.

Was the vibe there from the get go or did it just develope? If it just developed check to make sure the bushing is till there.

In your orig post you stated it stops when you let off the gas?

How about your main driveshaft. It is very hard for the short axle shafts to be out of balance, they are so short and thick and I really don't think they need weights on them. I had a horrible vibration and it was a combination of the following:

1. Unbalanced drive shaft
2. Worn yokes in differential
3. One rear tire had a "flat" spot.
4. Muncie bearings worn out. rebuild fixed it.

There are many causes. It is very hard to find the source while you are driving in the car.

Good Luck hope yours is less painful then mine.

I had a vibration problem for years with my 74 and did everything that was said above. This past winter I replaced both trailing arms with offset units from Van Steel. When they inspected my old arms they found that one spindle was bent (.012 out). Once I got the new arms installed and running there was no more vibration. Take a dial indicator and check your spindles. It might save you a lot of unnecessary parts swapping and the money associated with it.

I will ck the spindles. As far as tranny bushings the were replaced. the tranny has less than 100miles on it I did a complete overhaul. motor trans, rear end, drive shaft, axles ft & rear springs all new. The vib comes in after 30-35 mph and stays. It rides perfect when I put it in neutral.

Sounds like the driveshaft. I had a new Z28 that did that except it was smooth until 80 mph. I had GM replace the steel driveshaft with an aluminum shaft from a 1LE Camaro (under warranty, no less) and the vibe was gone. When it vibrated I could push in the clutch and it would stop.

That is odd since the drive shaft would still be turning the same speed. Always thought vibes with the clutch in would be in front of the trans (eng, flwwheel/flexplate, clutch/tc) or when engaged would be tranny back if no vibe when in neutral and reving at the same rpm's.

Thought so also but apparantly vibes increase the more power that is transmitted through the (unbalanced) driveshaft. I'm not a mechanical engineer so I can't explain it.

Me neither, so I'll buy it. I was getting a bad vibe (no pun intended) in my formula at higher speeds but I found the rear u-joint and cap had been misaligned when assembled, vibe went down a lot once I fixed it but still have a little at higher speeds.

I then replaced the camber rods (which I said were worn)and set both sides Poss. My vibration is gone. Thanks 2 all who replyed. Seems c3s need that poss. camber. Man it rides like a dream.
Thanks 2 all,

Good that you got rid of the vibe, but C3's need negative camber in the rear. Stock spec is -1/2 degree.
