Default SidePipe Question

I am in the process of building a Big Block for my '78 Vette. Before I get back on the street I want to buy a set of Hooker Header Sidepipes. The Vette will be painted black and I want the sidepipes to have the chrome look. I like the idea of having them ceramic coated to keep the temps down.

My question is, should I buy a set of chrome pipes, and have them coated, or buy them directly from JetHot?

Someone suggested buying a set that is painted black, fit them to the Vette, then send them off to be coated.

What would you suggest?

Thanks!

If you're coating anyway, just go through Jet-Hot. Cheaper in the long run even if they are marginally higher. You save shipping two ways and those bad boys use B I G boxes.

he's rite on the money. took me 2 weeks to find boxes big enough to ship my headers to jet-hot, not to mention shipping. get em in the lustre finish, you'll love them. they'll never turn collors on U like chrome does. take a look. http://www.cardomain.com/id/rlato

Got mine from Jet-Hot. Good match with the aluminum wheels. Right now, I am waiting on a set of coated heat shield from www.cobrastuff.com so I can prevent the wife from getting burned (again).

Steve, get some pics when they arrive! I'm in the exact same boat.
I was sorta planning to have these Jet-Hot coated...

Why would you pay the extra big $$ for chrome and then have them coated ? Best bet is to order a set of sterling finish from Jet-Hot IMO...

I'm not sure if this helps with the fit to the rockers.

Maybe a more pointed question...

What's the didtance between teh rocker and the sidepipe? Is the bolt and cushion visible?

I think each set of pipes and each car is a liiiiittle bit different, I've seen some where the rocker didn't need any trimming. Mine for example would probably clear the rocker on the drivers. side but the pass. needed a cut.......nothing under the car should be visible

Question: How did you guys slide the molding back into place?

I have not reinstalled my rocker moldings since the car is at the body shop right now. I am assuming that you have to trim the sidepipe mount bolts down to get the rocker molding in place. The only way I can see right now is to jack the car up, pull the rear wheels and slide the trim piece in from the rear.

Here are the Cobrastuff units. $200 Ceramic coated. Alex assured me that they would be good match for the Jet-Hot coating.

I just drop mine in from the top front first, it's a little tight but not impossible. FWIW I cut the front mounting bracket from the sidetube for ease of install overall.....

Steve, what did he say about the clamps fitting the 4" hooker sidepipes? I think those are made for 3 1/2" pipe and add to that the thickness of the header wrap strips for the clamps.

You do not need the stuff above.

Make sure to order the sidepipes with the coating on the inside also. Mine are coated inside & out. Even after driving a while you can touch them with the palm of your hand and not get burned.

They cool down quick but not quick enough. I have a seven year old daughter and my wife now has a nice 2" by 3" burn on her leg from the pipe. I don't need to risk more injuries.

Mine in and out as well... Waiting to order shields until the pipes are battle-tested for burn potential.

I would like to see a good picture of someone's sidepipes with the covers. I think the covers take away from the clean lines of the Hookers. Yes, I have a scar on the back of my leg from my sidepipes.

I agree but IMO the covers would look better if they were longer, maybe just behind the four into one back to where they turn out at the end. It would look more continuous and hide where they join together. No offense intended though for the short ones.
